STRENGTHENING CHARACTER EDUCATION IN PRIMARY SCHOOL THROUGH LEARNING SOCIAL SCIENCE

Character is a personality that is formed from the results of the internalization of various
virtues that are believed and underlie the perspective, thinking, attitudes, and ways of acting on
that person. Character education is very important to prevent students from rape, sexual abuse,
drug abuse, student fights, gambling, and other criminal acts which are problems of education
in Indonesia. To avoid this behavior, strengthening character education needs to be given.
strengthening character education can not only be done through religious and civic education,
but also through social science education. To strengthen children's character education through
social science education, the role of the teacher is needed. Teachers in social studies learning
should be able to integrate character values. These values can be delivered intellectually when
starting or ending the learning process; set learning goals that lead to changes in students'
behavior and personal behavior; selecting the learning approach that is seen as the most effective;
consider the steps or procedures, methods and learning techniques; setting the minimum criteria
for success. Through the strengthening of character education in teaching social sciences are
expected to cultivate good character includes the understanding, awareness, and actions based
on ethical values to students in primary schools.
